Practicing Theravadin Buddhism in Sri Lankan TraditionOregon Buddhist Vihara |
The Oregon Buddhist Vihara is a monastery in the Sri Lankan tradition of Buddhism. Its main goals are twofold: 1) to help Sri Lankan children born in the U.S. learn the traditions of their homeland; 2) to help Americans learn "pure Buddhism", meditation, and other techniques for reducing and ultimately removing stress and suffering.
Services (or "puja") are conducted in Pali predominantly; some Sinhalese or English may be used depending on the participants. In the Theravadin tradition, puja includes "offering of food, flowers, incense, water, etc. recitation of the refuge formula, a short meditation, and so on." A discussion usually follows, with instruction in Sinhalese and/or English depending on who is there at the time.
Venerable T. Bodhiseeha Thero is abbot of the monastery. He holds a masters degree in Buddhist Studies from a University in Sri Lanka.
Services are generally held Saturdays and Sunday evenings starting at 7 pm. But call first to confirm.
