Bringing Buddhist Practice to Modern LifeThe Kalavinka Dharma Group |
The Kalavinka Dharma Group is presided over by Bhikshu Dharmamitra, a fully-ordained Chinese-tradition Mahayana monk, experienced practitioner, and translator of Buddhist literature into English from Classical Chinese. Bhikshu Dharmamitra is one of the original Western monastic disciples of the late Ch'an patriarch Venerable Master Hsuan Hua, who founded the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas in Northern California as well as many other Buddhist monasteries around the world.
The Kalavinka Dharma Group has been meeting since late 1997. Each meeting begins with one half hour of meditation, beginning at 7:00 pm, followed by Buddhist Dharma discussion from 7:30-9:00 pm. Individuals from all traditions and experience levels are welcome to attend. Admission is free, as always. (No "dana" is ever mentioned, or sought.) "Classic Insight" and Ch'an meditation techniques are taught. Emphasis is placed on practice methods common to both the Theravada and Classic Indian Mahayana.

You do not have to wait until our next meeting to browse our lending library. The library is always open to anyone with a serious interest in Buddhist Dharma. There are books in our library -- in particular some of the major Buddhist sutras -- with detailed and very insightful explanations -- that you cannot find elsewhere -- not at Powell's Bookstore, not at Borders, not at Looking Glass Bookstore, not at the New Renaissance Bookstore, not at Barnes and Noble. (You can find some of them at Amazon.com, and the Portland Central Public Library however.) You owe it to yourself take advantage of the rare opportunity to read these books.
Books in our library include the Shurangama Sutra, Lotus Sutra, Brahma Net Sutra, Amitabha Sutra,, Pure Land, Pure Mind, Pure Land of the Patriarchs, Bhadantacariya Buddhaghosa's The Path of Purification, and many more, including many Buddhist books in Chinese.
